Specification FAQs

What’s the difference between Type II and Type III anodizing?

Type II (sulfuric) anodize is a thinner coating used for corrosion protection and colour. Type III (hardcoat) is thicker and much harder, for parts that see wear and abrasion. Both are covered by MIL-A-8625.

What does Class 1 or Class 2 mean?

Under MIL-A-8625, Class 1 is non-dyed (natural or clear) and Class 2 is dyed.

Do you offer Type I chromic acid anodizing?

No. We run MIL-A-8625 Type IIB thin-film sulfuric anodize, which is commonly specified in place of Type I. Check with your customer or engineer that Type IIB is acceptable for your part.

MIL-DTL-5541 Type I or Type II: which do I need?

Type I uses hexavalent chromium. Type II is the non-hexavalent (trivalent) alternative that many primes now require. We run both, in Class 1A (maximum corrosion protection) and Class 3 (low electrical resistance).

What colours can you anodize?

Clear, black, red, blue and gold, and military colours such as olive drab, sand and flat dark earth (FDE). Ask about custom colours.

Do you run specifications that aren’t listed?

Very likely. We meet more than 150 industry, OEM and military specifications. Send your drawing with your quote request and we’ll confirm.

What certifications do you hold?

NADCAP accreditation for Chemical Processing and AQS, and ISO 9001:2015 certification. Certificates are linked at the bottom of every page.
